Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves

Navagio Beach is commonly known as Shipwreck Beach, and it is a jewel in the crown of Zakynthos, Greece. Having been fortunate enough to explore numerous beaches in different countries, in my opinion none are as beautiful as this.

The day began with a morning hike. Our guide expertly led us up a jagged cliff. I’ll admit I had my doubts initially, but once we made it to the top, those quickly washed away. Look how beautiful!

The beach itself is closed due to the risk of mudslides. So this view from above is one vantage point. And taking a boat ride close to the shoreline is another. And that’s exactly what we did next. After we hiked back down! 😉

We visited the Blue Caves then found a swimming hole. I’ll forever remember our son saying ever so casually, “This is the most beautiful place I ever swam.” Be still my heart!

Our guide and boat captain were both fairly young, and connected well with the teens. I can’t tell you how happy this made the FamTrav husband and me. The captain even let them each have a turn driving the boat. #corememoryactivated

During the land portion of our tour, we stopped for lunch at a traditional Greek café, where our guide Theo taught us how to properly enjoy bread service.

Pro-tip: generously pour olive oil on it and sprinkle with rock salt.

We visited the oldest olive tree on the island (est. 2,000 years old), made a pit stop at Xigia Beach (natural spa beach), and got a mini tour of Strani Hill where the National Greek Anthem was written. And somewhere in between the teens befriended more animals. (Theo met the dog while giving tours, and now cares for him.)

Weary from truly the best day ever, we made it back on the ship just in time to watch the most brilliant sunset!

So many wonderful memories continue to be made on this vacation, for which I am so, so grateful.
