Delos in 3D and an afternoon in Mykonos

Floating gracefully in the Aegean Sea, just a short ferry ride from Mykonos, the island of Delos is an ancient wonder steeped in myth and history. It is the birthplace of mythical twins Apollo and Artemis, former prosperous trading port, and the perfect example of an advanced civilization in the 3rd millennium B.C.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Delos is an open-air museum. With the assistance of 3D software on individual tablets, our archaeologist guide walked us through the ancient city. We walked through the Agora where merchants once traded. Visited homes of wealthy merchants. And saw the Terrace of the Lions, guardians of the sacred sanctuary. It is quite remarkable how much detail remains, including ornate mosaic tile floors, water reservoirs, and stones trenches for indoor plumbing.

A group of archaeologists and conservationists reside on the island year round carrying out preservation duties. But it is interesting to note that even if there were endless funds, manpower, and time, the site will never be complete as a large percentage of original artifacts are housed in the British Museum, and other museums around the world.

Once our tour was complete, we took the ferry back to Mykonos. The teens went back to the ship while the FamTrav husband and I found a beachside café for lunch. So fresh and delicious! We can’t even look at calamari (or prawn/shrimp) in the US the same again!

We wandered around the city taking in the sight and sounds. Like Santorini, Mykonos is very picturesque. There are lots of stores with unique gifts. I tend not to purchase a lot of souvenirs, mostly Christmas ornaments. But I could not resist an olive wood mortar and pestle.

We eventually made our way back to the ship, met the teens for dinner, and compared notes about the rest of our day. Another perfect day.
