Not every travel plan goes exactly as expected, but sometimes, the unexpected turns into something even better. During a recent trip to Nassau to spend time with my side of the family, we had one must-do experience on our list: the original swimming with the pigs tour in Exuma, Bahamas. We had it booked, planned, and were counting down the days.
Then the weather had other plans. High winds rolled in, and our original excursion was cancelled. Disappointing? Of course! But instead of letting it derail the trip, we made a quick pivot and booked a day at Da Pig Beach on Rose Island. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our visit!
From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a postcard. The water was that unreal shade of turquoise you think might be filtered in photos, except it’s completely real. Calm, clear, and absolutely stunning.
And then, of course, there were the pigs. From the 500 lb. Big Panda to the 10 lb. piglet, they were playful, curious, and full of personality, and made the experience so much fun.
Their snack of choice was diced apples.
In addition to the pig encounter, this is a full beach day. We snorkeled, kayaked, and enjoyed a full Bahamian spread including peas ‘n rice, baked chicken, steamed fish, mac and cheese, and mixed vegetables.
What made this day even more special was how effortless it all felt. Easy access from Nassau (just a 30 minute scenic boat ride) and a relaxed, laid-back vibe that let us truly soak it all in without feeling rushed. It was the perfect mix of adventure and ease, exactly what a vacation day should be.
This experience was also a great reminder of something I always tell my clients: flexibility can lead to something extraordinary. What started as a backup plan ended up being a fun, unforgettable day we wouldn’t trade for anything.
