Norway is quite simply the most beautiful country I’ve had the pleasure to visit.
Though it was incredibly cold and wet, I remember standing at the top of the Stegastein Viewpoint, and these are the exact words that came to mind. But let me backtrack and share how we got there.
Flåm, Norway, was the midpoint of our Northern European cruise. I knew several things to be true. Teen #1 was stoked to explore another mountain village, especially one this beautiful. Teen #2 would likely benefit from some rest and quiet time. We could all experience the scenic cruising through the Aurlandsfjord together from our forward balcony later that evening. With that in mind, three of the four of us set off to pick up our electric vehicles for the day ahead.

This drive was nothing I imagined, but everything I needed.
Have you even lived if you’ve not taken a sharp turn on a cliff next to a 48-passenger bus in a foreign country?!

Tucked deep in the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the larger Sognefjord, this tiny village delivers some of the most iconic scenery in all of Scandinavia, boasting snowy mountain peaks, lush plant life, cascading waterfalls, and spectacular views. The Sognefjord is nicknamed the King of the Fjords and is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. Further, the Sognefjord is linked to the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The highlight of our drive was reaching the Stegastein Viewpoint. Perched 2,100 feet above the Aurlandsfjord, this sleek, glass-sided platform juts out from the cliff edge, providing an unbeatable panoramic view.

The weather in Flåm is extremely unpredictable. At times, the sky was clear, and then it would change in an instant. We saw these clouds rolling in. They seemed to be racing across the sky.
There are two other very popular ways to see Flåm: the railway and a scenic cruise. Here’s why I didn’t book either of these.

I wrote before about selecting excursions with everyone in mind. The train would not have kept the teens’ attention. They’ve been on trains across Europe. They immediately pop their AirPods in and zone out. As for the scenic cruise through the fjord, we purposefully booked a forward cabin to enjoy the sights from the privacy of our balcony. And let me share, it did not disappoint.

We were out here for hours soaking in these incredible views.

Core memory unlocked.
Were I to book your Northern European cruise or land visit to Flåm, I would spend just as much time learning which activities are important to your group and make appropriate suggestions. So if you’re ready to ride the rails, cruise the fjords, and take in these epic views, let’s chat! 🙂
