Ísafjörður: Iceland’s Hidden Fjord Gem

Tucked into a narrow fjord on Iceland’s remote Westfjords peninsula, Ísafjörður feels like a secret, one that only the lucky few who cruise this far north ever discover. On our recent sailing aboard the Norwegian Prima, we had the opportunity to explore this stunning slice of Icelandic wilderness, and it was truly amazing.

Ísafjörður is a small, charming town surrounded by nature that stops you in your tracks: towering mountains, glassy waters, and the kind of crisp air that makes you feel instantly more alive. The town itself is postcard-perfect, with colorful houses, cozy cafés, and a deep connection to maritime history.

But what really makes this place special is its location. The waters just beyond the fjord are a prime feeding ground for marine life, especially in summer when the seas are rich with fish and krill. That means one thing for visitors: whale watching.

We boarded a small boat with a local guide who knew these waters intimately. Within minutes of leaving the harbor, we were surrounded by dramatic landscapes and a deep, mirror-like sea. The excitement on board was contagious.

Then it happened. First, a misty puff in the distance. Then a flick of a tail. Humpback whales are massive, graceful, and completely mesmerizing. These gentle giants come here to feed in the summer months, and Ísafjörður is one of the best spots in Iceland to see them up close.

Depending on the season, you might also see minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, or orcas. The boats are small and maneuverable, keeping the experience intimate and respectful of the animals’ space. It’s a true “leave no trace” encounter.

Whale watching is always a highlight for the four of us, and one of the rare ways you can still impress a teenager. 😉

On the return, we were able to spot several puffins, and I could not have been more excited! Never did I imagine they would be so tiny.

Pro-tip: Dress warm, even in summer. The Arctic wind on the open water is no joke, and layering up makes the whole experience more comfortable. Bonus points if you bring binoculars and a sense of wonder.

If you’re sailing to Ísafjörður, don’t just stroll the town and head back to the ship (though it is worth a walk!). Get out on the water. Whale watching here isn’t just a bucket list activity; it’s a front-row seat to nature’s greatest show, set against one of Iceland’s most beautiful backdrops.
