New York City: Spyscape & Ellen’s Stardust Diner

Last month while the FamTrav Oma was visiting, the five of us whisked away to New York City for a weekend getaway. We had two full days to explore The Big Apple. With an age range of 13-82, top of mind was activities that would appeal to everyone.

We covered the typical touristy sites, but there are two activities I wish to highlight.

SPYSCAPE

SPYSCAPE is an interactive museum and spy experience. While learning about the trade, the equipment, and the players – real and fictional – guests also have the opportunity to complete fun challenges. Once all of the challenges are complete, you receive your detailed spy profile.

Based on my performance, I am best suited to be an Agent Handler. That sounds about right. Ha! Oma received Cryptologist. The DH and kids all received Surveillance Officer.

There are two ticket types: SPY HQ Experience which is what we did, and SPY DATE Experience which could be a super fun first date idea.

Ellen’s Stardust Diner

If you’re craving dinner and a show, you must visit Ellen’s Stardust Diner. This 50s-themed diner serves American classics with a side of Broadway-style performances by the world famous singing waiters. I can’t even begin to tell you how enjoyable this experience was!

The waiters have ambitions of being cast on Broadway. They use their time at Ellen’s Stardust Diner to hone their skill, and get acquainted with performing in front of an audience.

If you go:

  • The diner is rather small, so you’ll get quite cozy with those at nearby tables.
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served.
  • Reservations are not accepted. Pro-tip: dine at off-peak times to avoid a long wait.
  • The diner is committed to helping its waitstaff achieve their goals. After the finale, the host passes around a donation bucket that is used to pay for acting/singing lessons.

New York City is always a fun destination. If you’ve been to any of the places, I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments.
